Sammy Elzarka, PhD
Sammy Elzarka is M&R’s Chief Advancement Officer. As CAO, he contributes to the professional advancement of the firm’s attorneys and staff by designing, implementing and continuously improving in-house educational programs, including those provided by way of Michelman & Robinson University (also known as MRU). In so doing, Sammy develops and maintains performance-based learning objectives for associates and staff; builds and delivers training courses, curricula, evaluation systems and educational practices; and executes on effective learning strategies that inure to the benefit and development of all M&R professionals – all in partnership with internal subject matter experts (e.g., senior attorneys).
He is particularly well suited for this unique position given his many years working as a Director of Learning, Teaching and Assessment. In that capacity, he created courses and scholastic programs at the university level; built systems to gauge the efficacy of academic and professional development efforts; and worked with a college of law to instill an outcome-based approach to instruction and learning measurement. Regarding the latter project, Sammy closely collaborated with law professors to promote a culture of continuous review and improvement, which helped to produce a coherent and responsive curriculum plan and successful ABA reviews.
No doubt, Sammy’s background in academia, which includes time spent as a Director of Assessment and Accreditation and Curriculum Specialist, has prepared him to effectively manage MRU and the firm’s CLE programs, as well as foster M&R’s culture of professional advancement and learning. So too does his academic pedigree. Sammy earned a PhD. in Education from Claremont Graduate University, with an emphasis on research methodology and quantitative analysis. Prior to that, he was awarded both an M.S. and B.S. from California State University, Fullerton. Likewise, Sammy holds a certificate from the Assessment Leadership Academy, which is administered by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and produces top-level experts in the development and assessment of education programs.
A frequent speaker on topics related to academic programming and assessment and professional development, Sammy has also authored chapters in two books: Handbook of Research on Technology Tools for Real-World Skill Development and Building Online Communities in Higher Education Institutions: Creating Collaborative Experiences.
