J. Frederick Emert is Of Counsel in M&R’s New York office and a member of the firm’s International Arbitration & Trade and White-Collar Defense & Investigations Practice Groups, though his extensive background goes well beyond those areas of law.
Jason formerly led a European-based NGO committed to strengthening the rule of law, political processes, good governance, and anti-corruption in locations around the world. That experience led to him serving as a trusted advisor to many foreign governments, political parties, and leaders, and the close professional relationships he has developed internationally has provided the opportunity for him to work on legal issues touching every continent on the planet. An example of Jason’s footprint overseas is his work as a registered arbitrator with the Arbitration Center at the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo, as well as an advisor to the prime minister of Jamaica and counsel to numerous foreign ministries in the areas of national security, foreign affairs, energy, justice, and trade and development.
Closer to home, Jason has worked extensively in political and election law, having advised political action committees, state and federal political candidates, lobbyists and trade associations on campaign finance, lobbying, and government ethics issues and compliance.
Sports is another important area of focus for Jason, who was a NCAA Division I student-athlete. He has also been a college football coach and athletics department staff member. With that by way of background, Jason regularly consults collegiate athletics departments and higher educational institutions on a myriad of issues, such as NCAA compliance, administration and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) legislation. Similarly, he has been a players’ contract advisor for both the National Football League and Canadian Football League Players’ Associations. Jason is also an advisor to the French-based International Federation of American Football (IFAF).
Prior to joining M&R, Jason was recognized as a Young Leader in Foreign Policy by the Foreign Policy Initiative and was chosen to join prestigious delegations with the American Council of Young Political Leaders, the American-Swiss Foundation Young Leaders Conference, and the Qatar American Institute Young Leaders Exchange. Currently, he is a legal specialist for the American Bar Association (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI) in Bosnia-Herzegovina and chairs the International Law Committee of the ABA Young Lawyers Division. In addition, Jason served as chairman of the Board of Advisors for the Entertainment & Sports Law Societies, a national organization for law students; he teaches international law at Lincoln Memorial School of Law; is a guest lecturer on foreign affairs, global sports issues, and the law at various domestic and international institutions; and frequently appears in both domestic and international media to discuss law, geopolitics, national security and sports.
