Matthew Lasky is a senior associate in M&R’s Chicago office. A member of the firm’s Class Action & Complex Litigation Practice Group, Matt has extensive experience in all phases of discovery and trial preparation, including evidentiary hearings, motion practice and client and witness interviews. He represents clients in the real estate; healthcare; insurance; internet, software and technology, banking and cryptocurrency industries, among many others.

Having compiled an impressive record of wins both in and out of the courtroom, Matt has successfully drafted and argued several dispositive motions and researched and drafted multiple appellate briefs filed at the state and federal levels. He also has significant deposition and second-chair trial experience.

Commercial & Business Litigation: Obtained a significant judgment in Illinois in favor of a computer programmer working on a visa whose employer had stolen a considerable amount of his wages, and successfully defended the programmer against a subsequent breach of fiduciary duty action filed against him by the employer.
Environmental Defense: Successfully defended a client against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which filed a complaint seeking penalties in excess of $1M for violations of the Clean Air Act and the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. The EPA alleged that the client operated a plant that leaked a hazardous substance into the air before being shut down by EPA. Choosing to push back against the proposed penalties versus a merit-based challenge, the dispute was favorably resolved for $5,000.
Employment Law: Researched and drafted successful motion for preliminary injunction against a client’s former employee who violated a restrictive covenant by misappropriating client lists and other trade secrets via email in order to aid a competitor.
Professional Liability: Researched, drafted, and argued motions to dismiss claims of professional negligence against several real estate appraisers, who were sued for allegedly over-appraising homes in the lead-up to the financial crisis of 2007-08. In this series of cases, successfully achieved several full dismissals on behalf of his clients.
Commercial Litigation: Researched and drafted portions of a successful appellee’s brief in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where the district court’s grant of summary judgment in favor of the client was upheld. In the breach of contract case, the appellant had unsuccessfully attempted to pierce the corporate veil to reach the assets of the client’s parent company.
