Jonathan Koppell is counsel in M&R’s New York office and member of the firm’s Commercial & Business Litigation and Intellectual Property Practice Groups. His work encompasses a diverse range of federal and state court disputes across industries, with a particular expertise in the energy, technology, finance, and securities sectors.

From inception through trial, Jonathan is involved in a range of cases, including those alleging breach of contract, torts, and intellectual property-related claims. A fierce litigator, he is regularly called upon to handle all aspects of the litigation process, including hearings and trial, and has done so in courts and arbitral forums in New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.

Prior to joining Michelman & Robinson, Jonathan was an associate at McKool Smith, P.C. and Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, where he handled a variety of commercial matters. While a law student at Columbia University, he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and contributed to the Columbia Science and Technology Law Review. Before that, Jonathan earned an M.S. (Biological Sciences) from Binghamton University and co-authored an article on the genetic diversity of Bradyrhizobium in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Energy: Defending the largest natural gas producer in the U.S. (and its affiliates) in putative class action in federal court against claims relating to the calculation and payment of royalties on natural gas liquids.
Energy: Defending a natural gas producer and its affiliates in West Virginia state court against claims involving royalty underpayments, breach of contract, trespass, fraud and alleged statutory violations relating to the timeliness of royalty payments.
Energy: Defending a natural gas producer in Pennsylvania state court against claims alleging breach of contract.
Energy: Defending a midstream company in Kentucky state court against claims of breach of contract and tortious interference claims relating to obligations under a pipeline easement agreement.
Securities Litigation: Represented trustees, hedge funds and institutional investors in residential mortgage-backed securities put-back and servicing litigation against financial institutions, mortgage originators and servicers in New York State Supreme Court, Commercial Division. Obtained significant wins before trial resulting in highly favorable settlements.
IP Litigation: Represented biotechnology company, healthcare company and their affiliates in district court litigation involving monoclonal antibody biologic and parallel inter partes review (IPR) proceeding that challenged a patent claiming antibodies targeting the interleukin-4 receptor. Obtained invalidation of patent in the IPR and district court litigation was subsequently stayed pending appeal.
IP Litigation: Represented brand name pharmaceutical manufacturer in federal court in patent infringement action concerning validity claims relating to certain Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs).
IP Litigation: Represented linen manufacturer in trademark and copyright infringement disputes.
Real Estate: Represented private real estate developer in expedited commercial real estate arbitration involving claims relating to a breach of contract and relating to the construction of a condominium hotel.
