"The revelations from the Panama Papers are another reminder of what seems to be a common practice of wealthy taxpayers and corporations to hide money offshore. This may not always be for tax evasion purposes since there are legitimate privacy, business, and security reasons for having offshore accounts and entities, although tax evasion is a common motivation. These revelations have caused a knee-jerk response by governments and politicians whose initial reactions were to form task forces or set up inquiries into tax evasion and to express surprise and horror that corporations and wealthy taxpayers — including well-known politicians — hold assets in offshore entities.
