"Tucked gracefully beside the bright lights and crowds of Eataly is a new shining gem, Baffo, brought to us by the B&B Hospitality Group — celebrity chefs and restaurateurs Mario Batali and Lidia and Joe Bastianich. Having already been to Eataly numerous times, I was expecting Baffo, 44 E. Grand Ave., to open as a self-indulgent, brand-promoting, New York-centric production (a la Il Mulino), with exorbitant prices, small portions and a cost-prohibitive wine program. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised to learn just how wrong I was about my preconceived notions.

Rather than invading the Chicago market with a decidedly New York concept, the B&B team came here with open minds for their fine-dining restaurant. Apparently realizing that NYC ’tude doesn’t play well with Chicagoans, they drew front-of-the-house talent from the currently shuttered (for renovations) Spiaggia; shout outs to Nikola and Carl, who kept me smiling throughout the evening. Baffo’s bar is roomy, but its dining space is small, a little tight — yet warm and unpretentious."
