Michelman & Robinson Client Real Restaurant Group Opens Highly Anticipated Eatery Mezze After Complex Buyout

April 1, 2011

Michelman & Robinson, LLP’s (“M&R”) warmly congratulates its client Real Restaurant Group (“RRG”) on the recent grand opening of the restaurant Mezze in West Hollywood, California. Mezze, which offers diners a contemporary take on rustic Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, officially opened its doors to the public on Monday, March 28, 2011.

As highly experienced legal professionals in the restaurant, food and beverage industry, M&R was retained by RRG to assist in its acquisition of the leasehold interest of 401 North La Cienega Boulevard from the former ownership, a partnership of investors who had previously operated the restaurant Sona. Subsequent to the acquisition, RRG transformed the space to offer a fresh and innovative dining experience for the Los Angeles landscape by featuring a bold blend of Syrian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Israeli and Turkish flavors.

Led by M&R attorney Jordan R. Bernstein, the Firm’s Hospitality Law Group successfully navigated RRG through a complex leasehold buyout, which included multiple parties and intricate complications caused from Sona’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In order to achieve the transaction and close escrow, Mr. Bernstein diligently negotiated with the landlord and outside investors to secure the consent to assignment of the lease, the liquor license, and furniture fixtures and equipment from the respective factions. He also worked closely with the City and the bankruptcy court to retain the necessary approvals for the restaurant’s launch.

"We are thrilled to congratulate RRG on the opening of Mezze. The buyout had many moving parts and lasted close to a year. It is especially gratifying to watch our client succeed after overcoming so many hurdles. Jordan did exceptional work balancing the competing interests of multiple parties and successfully advocating for RRG throughout a complicated situation," says David Samuels, who heads M&R's Hospitality Law Group.

"We are extremely pleased with the work that Jordan Bernstein and the M&R team put into the buyout,” says Matt Bendik, Managing Partner of Mezze. "Jordan did an outstanding job representing our interests and managing a complex transaction."
