Michelman & Robinson, LLP Adds to Its Stellar Team of Transactional and Corporate M&A Partners with the Hiring of PartnerPDF
Michelman & Robinson, LLP ("M&R") is pleased to announce that Umera Ali has joined the firm as a partner in its Chicago office.
A member of M&R's Corporate & Securities Practice Group, Ms. Ali is an extraordinary global finance attorney with a professional background unlike most others. She comes to M&R after years in Bahrain associated with a U.S.-based blue-chip law firm.
While working in the Arabian Peninsula – and before that, in Pakistan – Ms. Ali developed a robust and sophisticated practice advising domestic and foreign financial institutions (issuers, underwriters, lenders, borrowers, and the like) in a wide range of credit and debt-issuance transactions. Her efforts on behalf of an expansive client base encompassed, among other things, asset-based financing, capital markets, project finance, derivative and structured finance, global banking facilities involving several layers of credit (e.g., multi-lateral agencies, senior, mezzanine, subordinated, and vendor), and Islamic and corporate finance. She also represented creditors and debtors in restructurings and workouts of various types of financial transactions. While continuing to service entities overseas, Ms. Ali brings this breadth of experience to M&R's domestic clientele as well.
In terms of transactional counseling, Ms. Ali is quite well versed. She routinely provides guidance in connection with receivables financing transactions under both conventional and Islamic structures. Likewise, she advises on a variety of debt deals and debt-based financing arrangements, including straight debt; fund-linked, high-yield, and convertible bond offerings; subordinated debt; the establishment of global and Euro medium-term notes and commercial paper debt issuance programs; and the development of innovative convertible and exchangeable products. In addition, Ms. Ali has participated in several petrochemical, mining, infrastructure, and manufacturing finance transactions in Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia.
"Umera is a special lawyer and an exceptionally talented dealmaker," says Michael Poster, head of M&R's Corporate & Securities Practice Group. "She has negotiated and structured a span of complex transactions, drafted a laundry list of associated commercial agreements, and advised on a number of transactions, financial and otherwise. We are beyond thrilled to have her at the firm." Adds Dana Kravetz, M&R's firm managing partner and Chair of its Hospitality Industry Group, "Umera absolutely raises the bar when it comes to our global finance and transactional footprint. She brings with her a perspective and skillset that is a rarity among law firms here in the U.S." Michael Kasdin, the managing partner of M&R's Chicago office agrees and offers the following, "Umera's hiring is yet another step toward the firm's measured and strategic growth in Chicago, a market penetrated less than a year ago."
Ms. Ali studied law at the University of Kent, England and did her postgraduate, bar vocational course, at City University (formerly Inns of Court School of Law) in London, and was called to the bar at the Lincolns Inn. Ms. Ali is a premier practitioner, whose global finance and leading edge deal work is, as Mr. Poster puts it, "a cut above." Commenting on her arrival, which coincides with that of two other partners, Scott Lyon (Orange County) and Jeremy Richardson (New York), Ms. Ali says, "After more than 15 years working with some of the world's largest and most innovative financial institutions and banks, I am really excited by the opportunity to zealously devote myself to M&R's world-class clientele - and to get to do that from a place as wonderful as Chicago means a great deal to me."
