Lara Shortz spoke at the 2015 Southern California Hotel & Lodging Conference on the topic of “Strategies for Preventing a Cyber-Attack/Hack” on September 23, 2015, in the City of Industry, CA. During her presentation, Lara examined how members of the hospitality industry can implement relatively simple yet effective procedures to safeguard against cyber-attacks. Hotels and purveyors in the food and beverage industry are consistently rated as primary targets of cyber-attacks. These attacks can be both external as well as internal, and therefore, maintaining a comprehensive security system, along with up-to-date policies and procedures, is critical. Lara discussed how to maintain compliance with the most recent laws relative to cyber security, implement effective policies and procedures to safeguard and properly dispose of sensitive data, and train employees on best practices to ensure the highest level of cyber security.
