Spencer Hamer spoke on the Practice Management Track at the Urgent Care Association of America’s (UCAOA) Spring Convention on “Recruiting, Interviewing and Hiring Insights: How to Comply with the Law and Attract Top Talent.”

Urgent care is one of the fastest growing segments of American healthcare. Many urgent care centers (UC’s) do not realize that as they grow beyond a staff of 15, there are legal restrictions on the types of information they can request per The Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII). Employment lawsuits based on discriminatory hiring, therefore, have been on the rise. It is important for UC’s to understand the potential risks, the relevant law, and to adapt their hiring practices to avoid what could be construed by a job candidate as discrimination.

At the conclusion of this session attendees knew:

  1. The protected classes of people under Title VII;
  2. How to use job applications, background checks, and establish at-will employment;
  3. How to use references and social media as part of a candidate’s investigation;
  4. The EEOC’s guidelines for employment testing; and
  5. Appropriate questions to ask during an interview
