Web Wary Travel: How to Safeguard Your Hotel from Internet-Related Legal Issues

David Samuels and David Lee spoke on a panel during the California Hotel and Lodging Associations’ (CH&LA) 2014 Northern California Hotel & Lodging Conference on “Web Wary Travel: How to Safeguard Your Hotel from Internet-Related Legal Issues.”

This topical presentation examined legal issues faced by hotel owners, operators and brands in the Internet age. It explored the newly emerging top level domain for hotels, discussing trademark, copyright and other intellectual property issues associated with it. From there, the discussion segued into rate parity concerns for the hotel industry, focusing on the important distinction between vertical and horizontal pricing agreements. Finally, the presentation delved into what hoteliers can do to stave off cyber-attacks.

  • What you need to know about the new TLD, “hotel” from a legal perspective.
  • How to approach pricing agreements with third party booking agents.
  • Tips and tricks for protecting against potential cyber-attacks.


Hosted by CH&LA and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), the NorCal Lodging Conference is the biggest hospitality conference and trade show in Northern California. This one-day of education, industry trade show and networking is free to all hotel staff. Each year over 500 hoteliers attend this special event to get educated on a variety of industry topics and to attend the trade show to see and buy the latest new products and services.
