Inclusion, professional growth, philanthropy and fun – these are words that perfectly describe M&R’s culture.
The firm fosters an inclusive environment where everyone has a voice. This encourages healthy internal debate and innovative, strategic thinking.
At M&R, teams of attorneys, paralegals and support staff work collaboratively to find creative legal solutions on behalf of clients. Here, everyone plays a pivotal role, and our commitment to a fully engaged workforce is unwavering.
So too is the firm’s emphasis on professional development, as well as the importance of giving back to the community. At the same time, we’re dedicated to making M&R the best and most enjoyable place to work. Toward that end, the firm places a premium on event and social engagement.
Professional development is in M&R’s DNA. Our philosophy is that clients are best served by legal teams continually working to improve their skills, business acumen and legal knowledge. For this reason and long ago, the firm established M&R University (MRU).
MRU offers coursework to M&R lawyers and administrative staff alike – a curriculum taught by outside specialists, our own attorneys and the firm’s administrative and executive leadership. Given the emphasis M&R places on professional development and education, the firm employs a Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), who reports directly to the Firm Managing Partner, serves on our Executive Management Committee and facilitates the administration of MRU. The program encompasses all of the following:
Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
M&R is an MCLE approved provider. As such, our lawyers receive credit toward their mandatory CLE requirements when attending MRU programs, which are specifically tailored so that they have practical application to our attorneys’ practices as well as the industries they serve.
Professional Development and Skills Training
MRU is focused on the professional development of and skills training for our attorneys and administrative staff. Toward that end, seminars are offered that run the gamut from trial practice and elimination of bias for lawyers, to technology-focused "lunch n’ learns" for legal assistants and advanced Excel classes for our accounting professionals.
Practice and Industry Updates
We understand the importance of being attentive to our clients’ industries as well as ever-changing market trends and conditions. To ensure that we are, senior attorneys conduct MRU classes on current issues impacting designated business sectors, competitive landscape analysis, emerging technologies and the intersection of industry and legal strategy.
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
At M&R, we embrace these words by Winston Churchill and seek not only to work for the benefit of our clients, but also to positively impact our communities and the world around us. We do so by adopting the passion projects of our people and committing time and resources to several charitable and community organizations.
In our view, M&R is at its finest when we give back. Toward that end, the firm provides resources and donates time to several nonprofits, including:
A charity that provides a wealth of vital services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. Each year, more than 50 of M&R’s attorneys, professional staff and their families join together to form “Team Inspiration,” which participates in the annual Ability First Stroll & Roll.
American Cancer Society
This organization is on a mission to free the world from cancer. The firm does its part by participating – year after year – in the Race for the Cure, raising money breast cancer research and awareness.
Angel City Sports
The mission of Angel City Sports is to spark the Paralympic and Adaptive Sports movement in Southern California. They do so in a myriad of ways, like hosting the annual Angel City Games at UCLA, where disabled athletes (kids and adults alike) compete in Track and Field, Archery, Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Tennis. The M&R family proudly volunteers at the Games and firm leadership sits on the non-profit's board of directors.
“I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles
M&R works with IHADLA to ensure that all children, including those that are underprivileged, have the opportunity to pursue higher education. With the firm’s support (and board membership), IHADLA adopts third grade classes and helps those children (academically and socially) over a period of 10 years. These efforts have led to skyrocketing matriculation rates.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Center
The JDRF leads the global type 1 diabetes research effort to keep people healthy and safe until a cure for the disease is found. We partner with the nonprofit and help organize the annual Orange County Walk to further the JDRF’s cause.
Peace Over Violence (formerly the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women)
Peace Over Violence is dedicated to building communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence. The firm actively supports the POV mission.
We proudly support Phase One, a 501(c)(3) that advances innovative Phase 1 cancer clinical research and treatment programs.
Project Hope Alliance
For over 25 years, Project Hope Alliance has worked to end the cycle of homelessness in Orange County. M&R has lent its assistance in hopes of improving the lives of 30,000 homeless children in the area.
South Bay Center for Counseling
The SBCC helps communities in Los Angeles County discover and develop tools for individual and collective well being, a cause particularly important to the firm.
U.S. Ski Team
M&R backed the U.S. Ski Team and its members that participated in the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Water Buffalo Club
We are delighted to be involved in the WBC (including board membership), an organization dedicated to the welfare of underserved and at-risk children in Los Angeles. The charity directly impacts smaller nonprofits by providing grants, hosting events, and supporting youth programs.
Zimmer Children’s Museum
The firm enthusiastically supports this wonderful museum (an M&R attorney formerly sat on its board) that has fun and interactive programs, exhibits and classes that teach community values and social responsibility to children.
M&R has a vibrant culture fostered by our Event & Social Manager – the firm’s so-called “Ambassador of Fun” – who maintains a company calendar chock-full of bonding events, all geared toward making M&R the BEST place to work. From themed lunches to destination retreats, our activities help to forge meaningful workplace relationships and create lasting memories. A sampling of firm events includes:
- Weekly in-house breakfasts
- Monthly office happy hours
- Holiday-themed events, including a blowout Thanksgiving celebration and a Secret Snowman gift exchange (a firm favorite!)
- Staff Events (think bowling, billiards and karaoke)
- Attorney barbeques
- Off-site partner retreats
- Firmwide charitable fundraisers
- Diversity and inclusion events
- An epic annual year-end holiday party
In addition to these (and other) events, screens at each M&R office display a “Living Storybook” – featuring photos of the firm’s lawyers, staff and their families – meant to foster teamwork and harmony. These scrolling pictures tell the stories of us – the people that make M&R such a wonderful place to work. And by sharing glimpses into lives of the firm’s workforce, we become more closely connected and fully engaged as a cohesive team.
Without question, events and social engagement lead to greater career fulfillment and job productivity, a hallmark of M&R’s culture. And who are the beneficiaries of the firm’s emphasis on fun: our happy employees and, by extension, well-served and satisfied clients.
